The Long Haul – Le Corrid’art artist collective is kicking off the season with its annual art auction and fundraising party. 30 artists showcasing an eclectic array affordable art plus special musical guest Maerin, and 1000$ worth of raffle prizes. All taking place in a unique, welcoming and kid friendly venue. Celebrate 14 years of keeping studio spaces affordable for emerging and established visual artists!

Occupying an 8000 square feet of an industrial building in Parc Extension, The Long Haul hosts exhibitions, open studio events, and other cultural activities by its members as well as other artists and cultural organizations. “By providing affordable spaces for artists to make and exhibit their art, we create a stimulating community of artists, which in turn invigorates the community at large”, says Long Haul co-founder and coordinator, Vanessa Yanow.

With the federal election coming up soon, it’s important to keep an eye on some of the issues that don’t get the big headlines. In 2008 the Conservative party cut nearly $45 million in arts and culture funding and it has seriously affected smaller artists. All the more reason that fundraisers like these are crucial for maintaining a vibrant arts community.

According to the Alliance For Arts & Culture: “The Liberal Party has made a commitment to double Canada Council funding to $360 million, increase the CBC annual budget by $150 million, increase funding to Telefilm Canada and the National Film Board, and invest $6 billion over four years to the heritage sector. Click here to view the Liberal Party’s responses to the Alliance’s federal election survey. The NDP have avoided making firm quantitative promises, however they have committed to reverse the $115 million cut to the CBC as well as implement an independent process for appointing members to the CBC’s Board of Directors. They state that they are clear supporters of Aboriginal artists and agree with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that arts and culture could play a key role in reconciliation.

See below information on the upcoming fundraising event and have a look at some of the work from the artists this collective supports. Try and pass by or do what you can to help out.
